Good News for Huntington Beach Seniors!
The new Huntington Beach Senior Center has approval to be built in Central Park according to a court ruling by the Court of Appeals. The city can build the facility in the park and use developer fees from the Pacific City project as originally agreed to. An environmental group wants to keep the park as open space. Part of the ruling was in favor of the Parks Legal Defense Fund, the group that originally sued the city in 2008, which indicated it would require the city to conduct a supplemental environmental study and a general plan amendment before starting construction. The environmental group has been fighting the senior center new location in the park ever since it was passed by voters in 2006. The project was approved by 51 percent of Huntington Beach voters.

The new senior center, which is budgeted at a cost approximately $22 million, will replace our existing facility Michael E. Rodgers Seniors' Center on Orange Street in downtown The new seniors center, is expected to accommodate a new generation of residents age 60 and up, and will be constructed at near Goldenwest Street and Talbert Avenue on about five acres in Central Park. The 45,000-square-foot project is expected to be constructed by Makar Properties and partner Farallon Capital. The city and Makar struck a deal that the company would build the new center in lieu of setting aside park funds for Pacific City. Huntington Beach City officials said the agreement is still valid but have not determined the opening date for the center.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Happy Valentine’s Day!
February 9th at 1:00 P.M. brings our HBCOA’s first luncheon and membership meeting of 2012. Make your reservations early by going to the front desk and purchasing your ticket for only $5. These luncheons do sell out because they are fun, fantastic and a great way to start the year!

I want thank everyone for their support in 2011. Because of your generosity, we were able to fully fund all of the commitments that HBCOA has made to our senior community and present a check to the city for $21,000 to fund a care manager position. At the December 19th City Council meeting, HBCOA board members, Carol Settimo, Glenda Lee, and Bob Dettloff, joined me to present the check to Mayor Don Hansen.

HBCOA also funds the Rescue Alert program. In a unique partnership between HBCOA and Rescue Alert of California, 71 low-income seniors were provided with personal response systems. In the last six months alone, the systems were activated 29 times for life threatening situations. Proceeds from the HB Firefighters Association’s Great Balls of Fire Golf Tournament helped fund this life saving program.

If you haven’t renewed your 2012 membership to HBCOA, please take the time to do so today! The needs of the senior community are ongoing.

Judy Ann Morris, HBCOA President
